A few days after receiving a notice of dismissal from service, an Assistant Sub -Inspector (ASI) allegedly committed suicide in the strong room having EVMs in Nagpur city. The police gave this information on Wednesday.
He said that ASI Ramchandra Nanaji Rohankar (54) ate poisonous substance in the strong room of Kalmana area on Tuesday night, after which he was taken to the hospital.
Officials of Kalmanna police station said that Rohankar, a resident of Hudkeshwar, died during treatment on Wednesday morning. The family of the policeman claimed that he was depressed after receiving a dismissal notice associated with an incident in 2024.
He said that last year Rohankar and Head Constable Bhushan Ramchandra Balkhode were involved in a dispute at Nimje Saoji Restaurant, a Restra Nimje in the city. He attacked the owner of Restra while drunk with alcohol and the video of the incident went viral, after which he was suspended by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ravinder Kumar Singhal.
Officials said that both were later restored and they were put on duty in the EVM Strong Room. However, after investigation last week, a notice was sent to the two policemen, asking why they should not be dismissed by service.
The police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the case. Rohankar’s family has told the police that he was depressed after receiving the notice of dismissal.
