A woman died and four others became seriously ill after she was allegedly given ‘expired’ intravenous fluids after delivery at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), following which the health department has set up a 13-day inquiry into the matter. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari demanded the arrest and resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the death of a woman after delivery due to her allegedly giving ‘expired’ intravenous fluids at a government hospital in West Bengal. Adhikari, who led a delegation of BJP MLAs at the Swasthya Bhawan here, told reporters that being the health minister, the TMC supremo cannot absolve herself of the allegations. Action should be taken against them. The leader of the opposition in the state assembly said that the CM is responsible for the death of the poor woman. The administration of expired intravenous fluids proves the poor conditions in the state-run healthcare system and the criminal negligence of the government. Banerjee should be arrested and she should step down immediately, taking moral responsibility.

Speaking to reporters, the officer also demanded the arrest and resignation of state health secretary NS Nigam and the superintendent of the MMCH, where the woman died.
He also demanded the formation of an investigation committee headed by the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court and an SIT comprising both the CBI and CID. Regarding the state government’s decision to probe the CID, the officer said the health department wants to suppress facts, just as they tried to suppress the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital. But BJP will not let this happen.
