A heart-wrenching case has come to light in Agra of a young man who has been waiting for electricity connection in his house for the last 16 years. As long as her father was alive, there was an electricity connection in the house, but after his death the electricity department disconnected the connection due to outstanding bills. Since then Yogesh and his family have not got any electricity facility. This case not only shocks the people of Agra, but also shows how the negligence and insensitivity of the government machinery is affecting the lives of common citizens.
Struggle for electricity connection: Yogesh’s pain
Yogesh (35 years) lives with his family in Nainara Brahmin area of Agra. He is also accompanied by his 75-year-old mother Lakshmi, who is now struggling with old age problems. Yogesh says that there was an electricity connection in his house 16 years ago, but after the death of his father, when there was financial crisis in the house, the electricity bill could not be paid. At that time the outstanding amount was around Rs 10-15 thousand, but with time that amount has increased to Rs 6 lakh.
Yogesh contacted the department several times, but every time he got only assurance. No one took their problems seriously. Since then not even a single electric light has been lit in his house. It has been a long and painful journey for Yogesh, in which he has not only shown his papers again and again, but has also made repeated visits to departmental offices.
Problems increasing due to lack of electricity
Due to lack of electricity in the house, Yogesh and his family are facing many problems every day. Children are forced to study in the dark. They have to go to the neighborhood to charge their mobile phones, as there is not a single charging point in the house. There is no cooling system in the house during summer, and so the family has to depend on candles and gas light.
The situation becomes even more dire in summer. Yogesh’s family rents a room for Rs 2.5 thousand every year, so that they can stay somewhere cool to escape the heat. But there is no electricity in that rented room either, and the family faces the same difficulty again.
Death of three-year-old daughter: painful consequence of lack of electricity
Yogesh’s pain became even deeper when his three-year-old daughter died. Due to lack of electricity during the summer season, she was neither able to study properly nor get any relief from the heat in the house. No proper medical facility could be found even to save the life of Yogesh’s daughter, because due to lack of electricity, no essential equipment could be operated in the house. This incident is not only a personal sorrow for Yogesh, but also shows the extent to which poor and needy citizens are neglected within the country.
Appeal to departmental officer and MP
Yogesh and his mother have been visiting the offices of government departments to find a solution to this problem for the last 16 years, but till now they have not received any help at any level. When he went to Torrent Power’s office, he was scolded and chased away. He tried to meet the officials several times, but no one listened to him.
Recently Yogesh contacted Fatehpur Sikri Lok Sabha constituency MP Rajkumar Chahar regarding his problems. The MP organized a 24-hour public chaupal at the MD office of Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited on Monday. In this Chaupal, Yogesh and his mother submitted a complaint letter regarding their 16 year old electricity problem.

Now Yogesh hopes from MP Chaupal that his problem will be solved. MP Rajkumar Chahar has taken this matter seriously and believes that this initiative can provide relief to Yogesh and many families like him. Yogesh believes that by listening to their problems through this Jan Chaupal, some positive step will be taken, and his family will be able to see the light of a bulb again after 16 years.
Negligence of government machinery: condition of other citizens
Yogesh’s case is not alone. Countless such incidents are coming to light across the country, where people are struggling for basic facilities like electricity. Despite government schemes and promises, the problem remains serious in many places. Due to the negligence of the electricity department and not getting timely solution, citizens are having to bear the brunt of the problems.
Like Yogesh, there are many families who are running their daily routine without electricity. Children of these families are forced to study in the dark, women are facing difficulties in household work, and people suffering from chronic diseases are also not able to get proper treatment.
