The Jammu and Kashmir government has started a ‘Digital Tree Aadhaar’ program for conservation of trees of Chinar, under which a comprehensive database of these trees facing danger due to rapid urbanization will be prepared. Under this initiative, trees of cultural and ecological symbol Chinar of Jammu and Kashmir are being equipped with ‘Jio-tag’ and QR code, which will record its geographical location, health and order information so that the consultants will record changes Help finding and removing risky factors. This campaign will use modern technology, including geographical information system (GIS), to create a broad database for the conservation of the trees of the Chinar. The objective of this initiative is to protect the trees of Chinar from urbanization, deforestation and damage to the bases etc. The project is headed by Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department Jammu and Kashmir Forest Research Institute (FRI).

The QR-based digital plate is pasted on each chinar tree included in the survey. Each tree is given a specific ID like Aadhaar, in which the year of survey of the tree is located in which district it is located and a serial number for easy identity. FRI Project Coordinator Syed Tariq said, “Chinar is a part of our culture. We are doing a survey to find out the total number of chinar, their status, their height, circumference etc. This initiative is taken. ” He said that so far about 28,500 chinar trees have been identified, survey and their data have been updated and this process is going on.
