There has been a big setback for the interim government of Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh. America has stopped all types of aid being sent to Bangladesh. The donor agency of the United States, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), decided to abruptly end or suspend any work under contracts, task orders, grants, cooperative agreements in a letter sent to project implementing partners. In the message, USAID gave this order to its partners in Bangladesh.
The suspension is being seen as part of a broader review of foreign aid allocation. The order covers all existing foreign aid to Israel and Egypt except military funding. The move is likely to put a halt to vital aid programs as it would ensure that billions of dollars of life-saving aid would be withheld. The Foreign Ministry has said that humanitarian food programs and military aid to Israel and Egypt will continue. Let us tell you that America is the world’s largest international aid donor. It had given assistance worth $72 billion to different countries in the financial year 2023.
