Court asks petitioner about the whereabouts of Rohingya refugee children in Delhi

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the petitioner non-governmental organization (NGO) whether Rohingya refugee children are living in temporary camps or regular residential colonies in the national capital.

Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh’s bench was hearing a petition in which the issue of admission of Rohingya refugee children in schools was raised.

NGO ‘Social Jurist’ approached the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court’s October last year order refusing to examine the petition for their enrollment in local schools.

The High Court said that this aspect will have to be considered by the Center as it is a policy decision. During the hearing on Monday, the Supreme Court asked the petitioner’s lawyer, “Where are they (Rohingya refugee children) living? What is their address? Where are their ration cards?”

When the bench observed that the petitioner was seeking a direction to enroll such children in schools, the NGO’s counsel said the petition was only about education opportunities for Rohingya refugee children.

He said they are living in regular residential colonies and not in temporary camps. The bench said, “Counsel for the petitioner has sought two weeks’ time to provide better information about the Rohingya families who are said to be living in regular residential areas instead of temporary camps. The next hearing of the case will be on February 17.
