According to the ‘Internet in India Report-2024’ by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and marketing data, insights and consulting company Kantar, the number of active internet users in India is set to reach 886 million in 2024, up from 156 million on an annual basis. According to the report, due to the increasing use of Indian languages for digital content, the number of internet users in India will cross 90 crore by 2025. Rural India is leading this growth with 488 million users and now accounts for 55 percent of the total Internet population.
The report emphasizes the growing role of Indian languages in shaping Internet usage. About 98 percent of internet users consumed content in Indian languages, it said. Among these, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam emerged as the most popular languages with their wide availability.

More than half (about 57 percent) of urban internet users prefer to watch content in regional languages, underscoring the growing demand for local language content across various platforms. In the last one year, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a significant game changer. Nine out of 10 Internet users have used apps with embedded AI capabilities. The widespread acceptance and enthusiasm around AI should encourage digital companies to introduce next-generation AI features in India.
According to the report, the gender gap in digital matters is continuously decreasing in India. Of the total internet users in the country, 47 percent are women, which is the highest figure till date. Urban India leads the adoption of non-traditional devices such as smart TVs and smart speakers, which has increased by 54 percent between 2023 and 2024. input language
