Not Granted Bail for Attending Budget Session Engineer Rashid on Hunger Strike in Tihar Jail

Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, has been jailed since 2019 after the arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the illegal activity (prevention) Act in the 2017 terror-funding case. On January 22, Rashid filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding a decision on his bail plea, which is pending in a trial court.

Independent MP from Baramulla constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, Sheikh Abdul Rashid has announced an indefinite hunger strike from today to protest against alleged misconduct in Tihar Jail. Rashid’s party Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leaders will also go on hunger strike to show solidarity with their leader at Pratap Park in Srinagar. Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, has been jailed since 2019 after the arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the illegal activity (prevention) Act in the 2017 terror-funding case. On January 22, Rashid filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding a decision on his bail plea, which is pending in a trial court.

His petition came after Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jeet Singh’s December 24 order, who refused to decide on his bail plea. Rashid, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate, made headlines by defeating Omar Abdullah, a leading National Conference leader and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, from Baramulla constituency.

The AIP said that party workers have planned to sit on a daytime hunger strike to show solidarity with Rashid. Rashid, indefinite hunger strikes in Tihar Jail are beginning. Rashid was elected to the Lok Sabha from Baramulla constituency last year, defeating Omar Abdullah and Sajjad Ghani Lone, president of the People’s Conference. Omar Abdullah is now the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
