The petitioners said the Karnataka government had identified a company for providing contaminated salty snacks on March 22, 2024 and had banned it for three years after intimating the West Bengal government. However, despite being informed, the Bengal government continued purchasing expired saline from the company, which was not revealed until the death of the pregnant woman last week.
The Calcutta High Court directed West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to file a report on the case of alleged use of expired saline in a government hospital in the state. The case pertains to the death of a pregnant woman after she was allegedly given expired saline at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital on January 10. Four other women were also admitted to the intensive care unit after allegedly being given the same solution. The court directed the state government to pay adequate compensation to the families of the victims and asked the Center to take action against the pharmaceutical company manufacturing the saline.

It said that although the health department had issued an order to ban the drugs in 2024, the state government had said that saline will not be used in 2025, but its use continues in government hospitals. Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant had accused the medical team treating the patients of negligence. The investigation by both the 13-member team and the investigation team revealed that there was negligence in handling those patients. The woman was given anesthesia not by a senior doctor, but by a post graduate trainee doctor.
