Anwar said that he had resigned to avoid his disqualification as an MLA following his defection as an independent MLA.
Independent MLA from Nilambur PV Anwar resigned from the post of MLA on Monday, days after joining Trinamool Congress (TMC). Anwar, who won the 2016 and 2021 assembly elections from Nilambur in Malappuram district as a Left Democratic Front (LDF)-backed independent, reached Thiruvananthapuram on Monday and submitted his resignation letter to Speaker AN Shamseer. Addressing media persons, Anwar said that he has resigned to avoid his disqualification as an MLA following his defection as an independent MLA.
He said he would now formally take membership of TMC and work as the state coordinator of the party in Kerala. Anwar said he would not contest the by-election in Nilambur and announced his support to the Congress-led UDF in the by-election. He also requested Congress to nominate VS Joy as its candidate in the by-election and claimed that Joy is aware of the issues of the constituency.
The businessman-politician, who has recently been speaking about the human-wildlife conflict in the state and the proposed amendments to the Kerala Forest Act, said TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had promised that the party would raise the issue in Parliament. Anwar also apologized to Leader of the Opposition (LoP) VD Satheesan for raising corruption charges against him in the Assembly once on the advice of CPM leader P Sasi.
