what is TRAI’s new OTP message traceability rule: TRAI’s new rule will curb fraud. This rule has come into effect from today. This rule is related to OTP traceability. This will affect more than 1 crore users of the country. The new rule was scheduled to be implemented on November 1, but was postponed to December 10 due to requests from telecom operators and the need for further preparation. Now it has been implemented. TRAI had made rules to prevent unwanted communication. To continue sending telemarketing messages, more than 27,000 companies had registered with telecom operators to comply with the new rules.

Fraud will be banned: Messages from any unverified source – especially those with suspicious links – will be blocked. Similarly, unwanted business calls coming from unknown numbers will also be stopped. It will become easy to trace the sender of any business message.
This will prevent fraudulent messages from reaching users’ phones at the network level. If a message is sent by a scammer, it will be stopped before it can be delivered. This way, the risk of becoming a victim of fraud will be reduced, and telecom companies will have to keep track of the entire path of each message.

What did TRAI say? The final date for implementing the traceability rule by TRAI was fixed for October 31, but on the demand of Jio, Airtel and other telecom companies, this date line was extended till November 30. Now it is being implemented across the country from December 1, 2024. According to TRAI, there is no possibility of delay in receiving OTP based messages due to traceability rules.
