Washington. US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to broker a peace deal in Ukraine, but as he prepares to take office, the peace initiative seems as far away as ever. Russia and Ukraine are trying to gain an edge on the battlefield to strengthen their position at the negotiating table ahead of any possible talks aimed at ending the three-year war. Over the past year, Russian forces have been slowly but steadily pushing back against Ukrainian security forces, trying to take full control of four regions in the east and south.

Russia forcibly annexed these areas at the beginning of the war, but was never able to fully occupy them. It is increasingly firing missiles and drones in an attempt to undermine Ukraine’s energy networks and other critical infrastructure. Ukraine, in turn, has sought to expand its footprint in Russia’s Kursk region. Ukraine has hit Russian oil hubs and other key targets vital to Moscow’s war machine with missiles and drones.

Both sides have adopted such an approach in connection with the talks where there is very little scope left for compromise. Trump, who had announced during the election campaign that he would end the war within just 24 hours, changed the deadline earlier this month and expressed hope that peace talks could be held within six months. His designated envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, says a peace deal could be reached within 100 days.
