The much-awaited railway line from Jammu to Srinagar under the USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link) project has received the green signal from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). With CRS certification, trains will be able to run at a speed of 85 kmph between Shri Vaishno Devi Katra and Reasi. Additionally, a certificate of achievement is issued for 15 km/h on station loop lines. This development paves the way for direct rail services to Kashmir, and plans are underway to run Vande Bharat, DEMU and MEMU high-speed trains on this route.

The project is a milestone in enhancing connectivity to the Kashmir Valley and is expected to provide a significant boost to the economy and tourism of the region. Northern Railway General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma said that CRS has given the green signal to run trains on the Katra-Reasi section. It marks the completion of the prestigious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Project. “We will work on the conditions laid down by the CRS in the report and accordingly a decision will be taken on running trains to Srinagar,” Verma said. He said the decision to run trains to Srinagar would be taken after considering security and other issues at the national level.

Due to security concerns, trains will have to stop at Katra railway station and passengers will have to deboard the trains and board another train from there to continue their onward journey. Also, due to security concerns, trains on the Kashmir route will run only during the day time. In the authorization letter, CRS Dinesh Chand Deshwal has given the green signal for the inauguration of the newly constructed broad-gauge line between Katra and Reasi stations for public transportation of goods and passenger traffic. During CRS’s visit last week, speed trials in both up and down directions from Katra to Banihal and vice versa were successfully conducted using inspection specially equipped with OMS equipment and operated by an electric locomotive.
