As the top health official of the Biden administration, Dr. Gupta played a key role in successfully fighting the opioid crisis in the US. The opioid crisis refers to the rapid increase in opioid overuse, abuse, and overdose deaths since the 1990s. This includes both prescription opioids and opioids that people use. One of the main functions of opioids is to provide anesthesia and pain relief, and they have been used for pain relief for thousands of years. Opioids are essentially chemicals that exert their effects by binding to opioid receptors present in the brain, central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract.
Dr. Gupta played a key role in the US reaching an agreement with China on the opioid crisis in which China agreed to take action against those responsible for drug trafficking into the US. Gupta said that with India, the US wants to create the most innovative drug policy ever established between the two countries. He said that there are three pillars of this cooperation. He said the first pillar is counter-narcotics cooperation, while public health is the second priority to ensure that progress made in both countries is supported and shared with each other. He said the third pillar is to develop supply chains for future pharmaceutical productions.
