The deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha said illegal mining continues unchecked in Assam due to weak law enforcement and local collusion. He said that I have written a letter to the Prime Minister requesting for an immediate SIT investigation to investigate this tragedy.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday said he has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an SIT probe into the mining tragedy in Assam in which several coal mine workers died. He also alleged that illegal mining continues unchecked in the northeastern state due to weak law enforcement and local collusion. Nine laborers were trapped after sudden flooding of a coal mine in Umrangsu in Dima Hasao district. Of these, bodies of four laborers have been recovered so far.

The rescue operation has entered its sixth day, but the fate of coal miners trapped in an illegal coal mine in Dima Hasao remains uncertain. The deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha said illegal mining continues unchecked in Assam due to weak law enforcement and local collusion. He said that I have written a letter to the Prime Minister requesting for an immediate SIT investigation to investigate this tragedy. Gogoi urged the Prime Minister that the proposed Special Investigation Team (SIT) should not only investigate the illegal operation of the mine and identify those responsible for the tragedy, but also address the broader issues related to it. This includes the failure to implement the NGT (National Green Tribunal) ban on rat-hole mining, the collusion of local authorities including the district administration and the district police.

He claimed that the SIT should also investigate the safety standards and working conditions in these mines, which are constantly ignored, leading to fatalities. “The investigation should expand its scope to identify and map other illegal mining sites in Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao and Upper Assam, where these activities are continuing unabated,” he alleged in the letter.
