NCP (AP) has very little support base in Mumbai. And if it contests elections in alliance then it will get less seats. Since Pawar wants to expand his party’s base in Mumbai, he is likely to contest the elections alone.

Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is likely to contest the upcoming Mumbai BMC elections alone. Meanwhile, the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena are likely to contest the elections in alliance. According to sources, there are two main reasons for this decision. The first reason is that there are only 227 seats in BMC. Due to less seats, it is becoming difficult for BJP and Shiv Sena to include NCP (AP) in the alliance. Secondly, NCP (AP) has very little support base in Mumbai. And if it contests elections in alliance then it will get less seats. Since Pawar wants to expand his party’s base in Mumbai, he is likely to contest the elections alone.

Earlier, a few days after Shiv Sena (Ubhatha) announced to contest local body elections alone in Maharashtra, party leader Sanjay Raut said that no alliance can succeed if communication between allies stops. Raut told reporters here that there is a need to appoint “responsible leaders” to maintain dialogue among the allies and Congress, the largest constituent in the opposition ‘India’ alliance, should play this role. He also said there was nothing wrong in contesting elections against alliance partners, but in such cases no party should call its former or potential future allies as “cheaters”.

Raut had cited lack of opportunities for workers of parties involved in any alliance and the right to organizational development as the main reasons for contesting the elections alone, raising a question mark on the unity of the opposition alliance. Rajya Sabha member Raut on Sunday said his party wants to contest the local body elections alone to strengthen its base and never sought dissolution of the opposition alliance ‘India’ or Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
